Deep Tissue
The therapist uses firm pressure and slow strokes to access deeper layers of musculature and fascia (connective tissue surrounding muscle), bringing the body back into balance but doesn’t always necessarily mean deep pressure. Is used to break up scar tissue and physically break down muscle “knots” or adhesions (bands of painful rigid tissue) that can disrupt circulation and cause pain, limited range of motion, and inflammation. Therapist may use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms. You may be asked to breathe deeply during the massage to relieve tense areas. At certain times during the massage, you may feel some discomfort or even some pain as the massage therapist works on areas where there are adhesions or scar tissue. Pain isn’t necessarily good, and it’s not a sign that the massage will be effective. In fact, your body may tense up in response to pain, making it harder for the therapist to reach deeper muscles. You should always tell your massage therapist if you are feeling pain during your massage. The therapist can adjust the technique or further prep the tissues if your muscles tense. Deep tissue massage may not be safe for people with blood clots (thrombophlebitis or deep vein thrombosis), due to the risk that they may become dislodged. If you have blood clots or are at risk of forming blood clots, it’s essential that you consult your doctor first and get a release or any special instructions that may be advised.

A type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body and combines deep tissue and myofascial release. Is used to when one part of the body is out of balance or misaligned, the rest of the body attempts to compensate until the entire structure is weakened. It works to free up constrictions in the muscle and fascia caused from injury, stress, work related repetitive movements and the effects of aging. This all can cause your fascia to lose its elasticity and become shorter, tighter, and denser. Tightened fascia pulls our muscles and skeleton out of proper alignment and posture, which can cause pain, discomfort, and fatigue. Structural Integration works to lengthen, stretch, and soften this tissue to restore postural balance, ease of movement, and a feeling of being more at home in your own body. It is practiced in an organized series of sessions or individual sessions within a framework that is designed to restore postural balance by aligning and integrating the body in gravity.

Impaired circulation leads to a buildup toxins (metabolic waste) which in turn can lead to re-occurring illnesses (cold, flu etc.) and feelings of sluggishness due to a depressed immune system. The rest of the body’s circulatory system uses the heart as a ‘pump’ to move blood around the body, but lymphatic circulation relies on body movement and breathing. As the world turns our energy shifts but sometimes the old energy is to familiar and comfortable for us so we become reluctant to make the shift completely. We then become weighed down by this stagnant negative energy that prevents us from being our best. It also prevents us from fully allowing positive energy to enter within us and keeps us from being the best we can be. When this happens we start to look for ways that can aid us in releasing this energy and allowing us to fully shift. This is where energy healers come in! Here at Downtown Massage & Wellness our energy healers will aid you in this transition so that when you leave you are feeling lighter, rejuvenated, and full of positive energy!
